How long does a consumer proposal stay on your credit report in Canada?
How long Equifax and TransUnion Canada generally keep a consumer proposal on your file, how the date is counted, and what to check once it ends.
Short answer
A consumer proposal is generally removed about 3 years after you finish paying it, or 6 years after you filed, whichever comes first. Exact rules can differ by bureau and province, so check each of your reports.
What to check after you finish
Get your Certificate of Full Performance from your Licensed Insolvency Trustee. Then check that both reports show the proposal as completed, and that each included account shows as part of the proposal with no balance owing and no new late payments.
If it stays too long
Dispute it in writing with the bureau and attach the certificate showing the completion date. If an included account still shows money owing, dispute that account too. See our guide to consumer proposal dispute rights.
