How long do late payments stay on your credit report in Canada?
How long missed and late payments generally stay on Equifax and TransUnion Canada reports, and when a late payment can be disputed.
Short answer
In Canada, late payments are generally kept on your credit report for about 6 years from the date they happened. Their effect on your score usually fades over time, especially if later payments are on time.
When you can dispute a late payment
If you paid on time and have proof (a bank record or receipt), if the late mark is on the wrong month, or if the account isn't yours, you can dispute it. A late payment that is accurate usually can't be removed early through a dispute.
Asking the lender for goodwill
If the late payment was a one-off, some lenders will consider a written goodwill request to update it. They don't have to agree, but it costs nothing to ask.
