Consumer proposal on your credit report: your dispute rights

What you can dispute after a consumer proposal in Canada — wrong balances, accounts not marked included, and wrong dates.

What should change after a proposal

Accounts included in a consumer proposal should be reported as included in the proposal, not as active debts with growing balances or new late payments.

Common errors worth disputing

An included account still showing a balance owing or new missed payments; a collector reporting a debt that was part of the proposal; or the proposal showing wrong filing or completion dates.

Proof to gather

Your proposal documents, the list of creditors, and your Certificate of Full Performance once completed. These show which accounts were included and when the proposal ended.

How to dispute

Dispute each wrong account with the bureau and attach the documents. If a creditor keeps reporting incorrectly, write to the creditor directly and keep copies.
