How long does bankruptcy stay on your credit report in Canada?
How long a bankruptcy generally stays on Equifax and TransUnion Canada reports after discharge, and what your accounts should show afterwards.
Short answer
A first bankruptcy is generally kept on Canadian credit reports for about 6 to 7 years after discharge, depending on the bureau and your province. A second bankruptcy is generally kept longer, often around 14 years.
What your accounts should show
Debts included in the bankruptcy should show as included in bankruptcy with no balance owing. A collector should not report a discharged debt as active or growing.
How to fix errors
Get your discharge certificate from your Licensed Insolvency Trustee. Dispute any wrong account or date with each bureau and attach the certificate.
