Wrong balance or settled debt on a Canadian credit report
Check a paid or settled account that still shows money owing. Compare dates, gather payment evidence and request an accurate balance from the reporting company.
Paid debt still shows a balance: what to check
A payment does not automatically remove the account or guarantee a higher score. The question is whether the balance and status accurately describe what you owe on the date shown. Start with the full account entry, not just the score on an app.
Compare the last updated date, outstanding balance, payment status and account number on both bureaus. A report generated before a payment may not yet reflect it. Ask the lender when it reported the update.
Paid in full and settled are different
For a full payment, keep the receipt and a statement confirming the remaining balance. For a settlement, keep the written agreement and evidence that you met its conditions. Paying less than the original amount without an accepted settlement may leave a balance.
Do not describe a settled account as paid in full if the agreement does not say that. Request the accurate status supported by your documents, not a more favourable but inaccurate label.
What to put in the dispute
Identify the creditor, the account’s last four digits and the report date. State the reported balance, the balance you believe is correct, and the date of payment or settlement. Attach only the relevant supporting records through the recipient’s official secure channel.
Suggested wording: “The account ending [1234] shows [reported balance] as of [date]. My attached [receipt / settlement confirmation] supports [correct balance and status]. Please investigate and confirm the corrected information in writing.”
If the account was sold or sent to collections
Ask who currently owns the debt and which company supplies the information to each bureau. A transfer and the original account may both appear without being an error. Challenge the specific inaccurate balance or status rather than assuming two entries prove double collection.
Confirm the correction
Retain the lender’s written response and the bureau’s result. Obtain a fresh report and compare the disputed fields. If the result leaves an error, refer to the earlier reference number and explain precisely what is still wrong.
