There's an account on my credit report that isn't mine
Steps to take when an unknown account appears on your Canadian credit report, including identity theft.
First 48 hours
Report the fraud to the lender, the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Ask Equifax and TransUnion to add a fraud alert to your file.
Dispute the account
Send a written dispute to both bureaus and to the lender. Say clearly that you did not open or authorise the account, include your police report number and ID, and ask for the account-opening records.
The lender must prove it
If the lender can't show that you applied for the account, it should be removed. Keep copies of everything and note the dates — bureaus usually have about 30 days to investigate.
