Wrong name, address or personal details on my Equifax report
How to fix incorrect personal information on your Equifax Canada credit file, and why it matters.
Why it matters
Wrong personal details are often the first sign of a mixed file (someone else's information merged with yours) or identity theft. Accounts attached to the wrong name or address can follow.
Your right to accuracy
Bureaus must keep your file accurate, complete and current under provincial consumer reporting laws and federal privacy law (PIPEDA). You can ask them to correct or delete wrong information.
How to fix it
Request your free Equifax report. Mark every wrong name, address, employer or date of birth. Send a written dispute with a copy of your ID and a recent bill proving your address. Keep a copy and note the date you sent it.
Check for accounts you don't recognise at the same time — they're often linked.
