How to remove collections from your credit report in Canada

When a collection can be removed from your Equifax or TransUnion report in Canada, and how to dispute it.

When a collection can be removed

It isn't yours, the amount or dates are wrong, it's listed twice (original creditor and collector both showing a balance), it was paid but still shows owing, or it's older than the reporting period.

Paying doesn't delete it

In Canada, a paid collection usually stays on your report as 'paid' until the reporting period ends. Paying stops it from showing as owing, which still helps.

How to dispute

Write to each bureau and to the collector. Say exactly what is wrong, attach proof, and ask for correction or deletion. Ask the collector to prove the debt and its dates.

If they refuse

Escalate to your provincial consumer protection office (collection agencies are licensed provincially) and the consumer reporting regulator. Keep every letter and date.
