Documents for a Canadian credit report dispute

Prepare a focused dispute package: your report, the disputed fields, identity requirements, payment proof and a record of submission without oversharing sensitive data.

Start with the actual error

Use the full dated report from the bureau showing the problem. Identify the account ending and the exact balance, status, payment month or personal detail you challenge. Write the correction you want in one sentence.

Match the evidence to the issue

For an incorrect late payment, include the account statement and a payment record showing when and where the payment was applied. For a paid or settled balance, include the receipt plus the creditor’s confirmation or settlement agreement.

For an unfamiliar account, include your explanation and any relevant fraud reference. For a court entry, include relevant court records and payment evidence. For insolvency entries, use your trustee’s documents identifying the included accounts and relevant dates.

Identity documents: use the recipient’s requirements

Check the current bureau instructions before uploading ID. Supply documents using its verified secure channel. Keep unrelated transactions and unnecessary identifiers out of supporting evidence where permitted; do not obscure details the recipient requires to verify the request.

Write a short cover letter

List each disputed item separately, why it is wrong, the correction requested and the attachment that supports it. Avoid sending a long email history without explaining which document proves each point.

Keep the description consistent when writing to the lender and each affected bureau. Ask for a written investigation result and keep the acknowledgement or reference number.

Keep your own submission record

Retain a copy of the complete package, recipient, submission date and reference number. If you use a portal, save its confirmation. After the result arrives, compare an updated report with the fields you originally challenged.
