My bank won't fix a credit reporting error — what now?
How the bank complaint process, OBSI and FCAC work when a Canadian bank won't correct your credit report.
Use the bank's complaint process first
Banks must have a formal complaint process. Ask for your complaint to be escalated to the bank's internal ombudsman in writing.
Then go to an outside body
After 56 days, or once you get the bank's final answer, you can take most complaints to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) for free. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) oversees whether banks follow the rules.
Keep the paper trail
Dates, letters and reference numbers are what ombudsman services look at. Every letter you send should ask for a written reply.
