How to dispute an error with Equifax and TransUnion Canada

Step-by-step guide to disputing errors with both Canadian credit bureaus, and what to do if they refuse.

1. Get both reports

Equifax and TransUnion are separate. An error can appear on one and not the other, so check both. Reports are free online.

2. Dispute in writing

Online forms are quick but limit what you can say and attach. For anything serious, send a written dispute with your proof and keep a dated copy.

3. Wait for the result

Bureaus usually respond within about 30 days. Ask for an updated report afterwards.

4. If they refuse

Send a second, more detailed letter. Then escalate to the provincial consumer reporting regulator, the lender's ombudsman, or the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. A lawyer's letter often gets a different result.
