Global Credit & Collection: how to deal with this collection agency in Canada
Global Credit & Collection is contacting you or showing on your credit report? Your rights, how to demand proof of the debt, and how to dispute a Global Credit & Collection collection with Equifax and TransUnion.
Who is Global Credit & Collection?
Global Credit & Collection is a collection agency operating in Canada that collects consumer accounts on behalf of creditors. Collection agencies usually collect for a bank, telecom, utility or lender, or buy old debts outright. The original creditor and the amount should be in their first letter to you.
Before paying anything, confirm the agency is registered to collect in your province. Ontario keeps a public search of registered collection agencies on the Ontario.ca consumer protection site.
Ask for proof in writing
Send a written request asking for the original creditor, the account number, the date of last payment, an itemised balance and proof they own or are authorised to collect the debt. Ask that they contact you in writing only. Keep a copy and the date you sent it.
If it's on your credit report
Check both your Equifax and TransUnion reports. Compare the date of last activity, balance and ownership. A collection usually drops off about 6 years after the date of last activity. If anything is wrong, dispute it with the bureau and with the agency at the same time.
What they cannot do
Collectors cannot threaten action they can't take, use abusive language, call at unreasonable hours, or discuss your debt with your employer, friends or family (other than to find your contact details). Note every call: date, time, name and what was said.
Paying an old debt
Paying, or even admitting the debt in writing, can restart some limitation clocks. If the debt is old, get advice first. If you settle, get the agreement in writing before you pay, including how it will be reported.
