I paid a collection but it still shows a balance

What to do when a paid or settled debt still shows as owing on your credit report.

It must be updated

Once a debt is paid or settled, the collector and the bureaus must update it to show a zero balance and 'paid' or 'settled'. Showing a balance you don't owe is inaccurate reporting.

What to send

Send the bureaus and the collector your payment proof or settlement letter and ask for the balance to be corrected within 30 days. If the collector agreed in writing to delete the item, include that too.

If they keep calling

Calls to collect a debt you've already paid can break Ontario's collection rules. Keep a log of every call and send a written direction to stop.
