A credit check I didn't authorise is on my report

What to do about unauthorised hard inquiries on your Canadian credit report.

Why it matters

Hard inquiries can lower your score and may be a sign that someone applied for credit in your name.

What to do

Ask the company that ran the check to show your consent. If it can't, ask it to have the inquiry removed and dispute it with the bureau. If you suspect fraud, add a fraud alert and report it.

Your consent is required

Under Canadian privacy law, a business generally needs your consent to pull your credit report. An inquiry without consent can be challenged.
